Shawn Colvin生于1958年严冬的1月10日，老家在南达科他州东南平原上仅7000人的小镇Vermillion，在家中排行老二。有印第安血统的Shawn从小喜爱摆弄父亲制作的木器，父亲学新闻学，祖父在小镇上拥有一家报馆。她父亲同样是个忠实的民谣拥戴者，经常模仿民谣小组Kingston Trio在屋前的草坪上为家人和朋友演唱。Shawn家中收藏了大量Kinston Trio、Pete Seeger、Harry Belafonte、Josh White的唱片和音乐剧原声大碟，其中Kingston Trio是她最喜欢的。由于父亲想培养大儿子对民谣的兴趣，特意为他买了把民谣音乐中特比使用得4弦次中音吉他。可是这个年轻人则迷恋于小提琴和古典音乐。
所以Shawn就常拿来弹，10岁时达到5级水准，后来，父亲买了把真正的吉他，因此Shawn和吉他越来越不可分离。在少年时代，她的家庭数次搬迁，每更换一个新环境，吉他都是她形影不离的伙伴，同时电台节目对她也越来越重要，从中她认识了Beatles、Simon & Garfunkel、Bob Dylan、Association和The Who。她同时也尝试写歌。
