每日一句似乎很少出现艰深的单字，vicariously 这个字我想应该够格了吧？形容词 vicarious 指的是「替代别人的」，或是「经由他人的经验而间接感受」。这是字典上的解释，说真的这段解释我是有看没有懂啦！我想用个例子来说明就容易多了，像我一直很后悔小时候没去学钢琴，所以我就会希望将来我的小孩去学钢琴来替我完成我的梦想，我的这种行为就是 vicarious。通常我们用的是一个片语，live vicariously through someone 来形容父母的这种行为。例如，"My dad has never been a football player. But now he just lives vicariously through me and wants me to play football." (我老爸自己都不是美式足球队的一员，但现在却要我去打美式足球，只因为他想从我身上实现他的梦想。)
我想我提出以上的例子一定很多人都有似曾相识的经验，但苦于不知道 vicarious 这个字，所以常会讲成 live one's dream through someone 或是 realize one's dream through someone。说真的我还真的听老美说过 "My mom lives her dream through me." 但我有一次这样讲时却被一个老美纠正说 live one's dream through someone 这样的讲法严格来说不是很正确的，至少他就听不懂。这里应该用 live vicariously through someone 比较容易被一般大众所接受。 My dad lives vicariously through me.
